The Israelites, the people of God, were at a unique time in their history. They had been mightily freed from their Egyptian enslavement. The land of promise was conquered through Joshua's leadership. Now, they needed to figure out how to be a settled people. God gave them judges, unlikely military leaders, who relied deeply on the power given by God. But, with each subsequent judge, the people moved further away from God.
The Israelites looked at all the other nations around and saw that they were ruled by kings. So, they decided to ask God for their own king. They were tired of having to rely on faith in the unseen. They wanted something, someone they could see and touch... just like all the other nations around them. Rather than being God's unique people, they wanted to be just like everyone else.
